Arts & Sciences Challenge
A pair of rabbits jousting in the margins of a prayer book. A raunchy woodcarving peering down at churchgoers from the ceiling of All Saints, Hereford. A clay sippy cup outfitted with legs, rabbit ears, and a spout out the snout. These artifacts and thousands more tell us something invaluable about the attitudes of our predecessors: even long ago, people loved to laugh.
For our Arts & Sciences Challenge at Regular Event, we put out the call for your objects of delight! A child’s clay toy with a silly face, an animal-eared chaperon, an embroidery of singing frogs, a peeking mouse hidden in a woodcarving – anything you create to make others smile is a welcome contribution.
This challenge is open to all members of the populace, and an under-12 category will be open for our younger crafters. Feel free to enter new or existing projects in any medium. Tables will be provided.
Voting will be by populace bean count, with the winner and runners-up announced at court. Setup is from 10 AM until 12 PM. All entries must be cleared by 3 PM. The populace must cast their votes from 12:30 to 3 PM to allow plenty of time to count. Please also be aware that the tables will not be continuously attended by event staff.

Classes
We’re looking for classes on humorous, playful or surprising topics for our “Misrule” class track! Ideas for classes in this track could include surprising or little-known historical events, commedia d’ell arte, juggling, period games and toys, writing funny songs or stories, cooking subtleties, Shakespeare’s comedies, and more. Just indicate that you want to be added to the “Misrule” class track when you sign up to teach!

11:00 AM to 12:00 PM — Youth Tourney: The Lord of Misrule
The winner of this tournament will receive the Lord of Misrule’s crown and may bear the title of “Lord of Misrule” (alternate titles include: Master of Revels, Chief Trickster or Mischief Maker, Festive Fool or Revels Captain, or Chaos Coordinator.)
This round robin style tournament is for authorized youths of any division and Adults with the Rapier Youth Sparring authorization. If you or your youth do not have these authorizations and wish to participate, please contact a rapier martial prior to the tournament to become authorized.
Pairings that do not involve a youth fencer will be fought at DIV 2 plastic rapier level. Plastic rapiers can be provided for participants.
NOTE: It is important for the promotion of youth involvement that youth focused activities are made visible to them. This tournament will be held even if no youth participate.
11:00 AM to 12:00 PM — Cut & Thrust Bear Pit Tournament
This tournament will be organized in the form of a bear pit where participants will line up around the list in no particular order. The first fencer in line will enter the next open list and hold a single bout against each fencer according to the format below. Wounds are NOT retained between bouts.
This tournament will be held in 2 rounds of 15 minutes each with a 10 minute break between them. The fencer with the most collected points at the end of the second round will be declared the winner. In the case of a tie, tying fencers will be asked to fight until a single victor is determined.
If attendance allows for two or more lists, fencers will hold the list for “Two in then out” (a fencer entering the pit will fight the fencer currently holding the list, then they will fight the fencer entering the list regardless of wins or losses). Following their second bout, the fencer will exit the list and report any points earned to the keeper of the list.
If attendance allows for only 1 list, fencers will hold the list until their first loss or third win, then reporting any points earned to the keeper of the list.
2 points earned for a victory unscathed
1 point for victory while having taken a valid blow to a limb
Simultaneous lethal blows are a loss for both fighters
1:00 PM — Round Robin: Japester’s Delight Tournament
This tournament will be organized in the form of a round robin where each fencer will match once with each other fencer. If attendance demands, fencers will be broken into smaller pods for time. Each pairing will meet for a match of two (2) passes. Winning only 1 pass will grant 2 points. Winning both passes will grant 5 points. Bonus points will be awarded to a fencer who RECEIVES a valid blow to their secretly chosen location. Each fencer shall report their points to the keeper of the list after their match.
The fencer with the most collected points after all pairings are complete will be declared the winner. In the case of multiple pods, winners of each pod will be placed in a victor’s pod where a final winner will be determined. In the case of a tie, tying fencers will be asked to fight until a single victor is determined.
For this tournament, Winning is defined as remaining alive while having rendered your opponent non-offensive. (both fencers being rendered non-offensive but not receiving a killing blow simultaneously will result in a win for both. Both fencers receiving a killing blow simultaneously will result in a loss for both)
Each secret location will result in a different amount of bonus points based on the difficulty of baiting a blow to that location. Once a fencer has chosen a location, that will be their secret location for the entirety of the tournament. Secret locations may not be changed.
- 3 points: Right lower leg, Left lower leg, Right upper leg, Left upper leg
- 2 points: Right arm, Left arm, Torso (includes armpits and groin)
- 1 points: Right hand, Left hand, Head (includes neck)
2:30 PM — Ladder of Renown Tournament: A Fool’s Ransom
Each fencer is asked to provide a ransom/prize suitable to their station as entry to this tournament. The tournament will be divided into four separate double elimination brackets.
The first “novice” bracket is for all fighters who have not received any kingdom-level combat award. This winner of this bracket will be entered into the next level bracket.
The second “Arms” bracket is for fencers who have received at highest a Cavendish knot or dragon’s tooth for fencing. This winner of this bracket will be entered into the next level bracket.
The third “Grant” bracket is for fencers who hold the title of Warder within the Midrealm or an equivalent fencing related award. This winner of this bracket will be entered into the next level bracket.
The fourth “Peer” bracket is for fencers who hold the title of Master of Defense and landed baronage or royalty who elect to join this bracket rather than the other bracket for which they would otherwise qualify.
Following the conclusion of the tournament, participants will be invited to select a prize from the collection of those provided. First selection will be given to the winners of each bracket in descending order, followed by each bracket in descending or by placement within that bracket until each participant has had the chance to make a selection.
